“‘Ode to South Korea’, I lived here for seven years; it was time to come home. Here I challenged my drawing style to reflect that of the current trends with layers of symbols that explore the complex relationship with the culture and its people. This was also the pinnacle of my fine art career, where I started to incorporate a more illustrative style along with a narrative. I loved my time in this beautiful country along with the struggles of fitting in, or the occasional challenges as a woman. But most of all, I miss the connections that I have made with some amazing people which have been incorporated into the drawing.”

I recognized the privilege I had, to live on the outskirts of a society and not having to fully conform in a strongly patriarchal culture. This pushed my interest to explore how women still hold their own when the pressures to conform are high.

I explore these concepts in my work, through the use of the female body, but she’s not slim, she’s not the majority but she is holding her own space. The colours are part of my own matriarchal ancestry, which takes me on a journey to British India. My work is transparent, it is honest and can be for any woman which why I leave the face and other specific features to the imagination of the viewer.
